Timing . Is . Everything
Luck plays a major role in many of the people we meet.
Tonight I had dinner with five women whom I have known for almost sixteen years. We all have varied work and life experiences and differing social circles that were it not for one ‘little factor’, we may never have met.
Our commonality is that sixteen years ago we all happened to have our first babies within a two month period. Because of that we were placed in the same group for new mothers, simply called a ‘Mother’s group’.
The maternal nurses within local councils oversaw these groups. They provided education and guidance during the early weeks of new motherhood - a time that can sometimes be overwhelming. Ideally within the group the individual mothers shared their experiences and offered support to one another.
Usually the formal Mother’s Group meetings ended after six weeks. When our maternal nurse told us that her part of the program was completed she suggested that we may want to continue. As a group we decided to do so, arranging to meet in various places - cafés, community rooms, each other’s homes.
Gradually as our children grew up and began their formal schooling our get-togethers lessened. Yet we still managed to catch up for the occasional coffee or dinner. We even went away for a weekend together.
More children came along, new homes were moved into, new jobs begun and further studies undertaken. Some have had health concerns while others have suffered the death of loved ones. In all, our little group has continued, catching up here and there; offering friendship and support.
Although it has been quite some time since I have been able to catch up with the group, tonight has reminded me how amazing a group of women we have. Such a dynamic mix of caring, thoughtful and sincere people. And fun!
When I have mentioned to others that I am seeing the women in my Mother’s Group - everyone seems surprised that a six week group has become a sixteen year group. And I realise how lucky and blessed I am to have been able to be a part of this loving and enriching group of women.
